Give 2 St. Joe's Kids
WE ALL NEED A HUG, RIGHT?
Hugs make us feel better. They make us feel loved and let us know everything will be ok. Well, the world is in need of a hug in a big way, and nobody knows that better than children. This January, kids are stepping up to give us all a BIG HUG, and they need your help.
On January 21, 2018, kids in communities around the world will participate in Big Hug Day by gathering in circles and hugging each other to show that when we have compassion for one another and treat each other the way we want to be treated, we could solve a lot of our problems.
Not only are they trying to help make the world a better place one hug at a time, they have an ambitious goal to raise funds and awareness for a cause that’s important to them – children in need. A donation of $10 or more sends a virtual hug to our very own kids at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. Or, to show support for the kids and their mission, donate $35 or more to receive an exclusive The Big Hug t-shirt and help support St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital.
Visit www.bighugday.com for more information on the big day.

Jenna Bush Hager
Jenna Hager has seen firsthand how small change can make a large difference in a single life. Currently the chair of UNICEF’s Next Generation, an initiative dedicated to reducing the number of preventable childhood deaths around the world, Hager traveled throughout Latin America and the Caribbean with UNICEF where she saw firsthand the plight faced by the underprivileged. Her experience inspired her to write Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope, New York Times bestseller based on the life of a 17-year-old single mother living with HIV and determined to shield her child from the abuse and neglect that riddled her own childhood.
Hager shares her own stories of creating change in someone’s life and leaves audiences with a call to action on how they too can improve people’s lives in their own community. A contributing correspondent for NBC’s TODAY, Hager shares positive, uplifting messages of regular people doing extraordinary things. Passionate about literacy, education and improving inner-city schools, Hager was herself a teacher in Baltimore, MD.
In addition to Ana’s Story, she also co-wrote Read All About It! with her mother, former First Lady Laura Bush. Hager and Mrs. Bush recently released a second children’s book, Our Great Big Backyard, which celebrates the Centennial of the National Park Service, and encourages children to go outside and explore America’s parks. Hager is currently writing a joint book of short stories with her sister, Barbara Pierce Bush titled Sisters First for release in October 2017. It will take readers on an extraordinary and deeply personal journey behind the scenes of what it is like to be born into a political dynasty, reveal never-before-told stories about their family, and uncover the enduring sisterly bond that kept them sane through it all.

For pregnant women who have an underlying medical condition or who develop a pregnancy complication affecting their body or baby, expert treatment is available at St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital. By integrating obstetric and pediatric specialty care for families facing a high-risk pregnancy, outcomes may be improved by treating the fetus or by condition-specific management of the pregnancy, labor and delivery. Our maternal-fetal medicine physicians specialize in perinatal ultrasound and see more than 9,000 patients annually for detailed assessment of fetal anatomy and growth, biophysical testing, and management of twin and other complicated pregnancies. Demand for our skill in and care of high-risk births is very high and growing. Adding an additional perinatal ultrasound unit in our program would allow us to help hundreds more patients a year.

THE AZURE SKY IN OZ, by William Leavengood, is a powerful, funny, but unflinching drama about two women whose lives are profoundly changed by their immersion in the world of the other-abled. Mary, a nurturing Special Ed teacher, defies her superiors and stars her ESE students in a production of THE WIZARD OF OZ with astonishing results. Michelle, an emerging visual artist, tries to raise and care for her profoundly autistic son while fighting against the system as well her own fear of losing her career in the process. Based on the experiences of two real-life Floridians, THE AZURE SKY IN OZ is directed by Padraic Lillis and stars Carrie Drazek in a one woman, tour-de-force, playing both of these intriguing and resilient characters in the play’s World premiere.

|Children are not just “small adults.” They have different diseases- sometimes even different symptoms- than those of adults, and their care requires the specific expertise and appropriate equipment available at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. We provide more acute medical and surgical pediatric care than all other hospitals in Tampa Bay and rank as one of the largest children’s hospitals in Florida. With your support, we make a difference in the lives of more than 50,000 children a year, bringing comfort and care to kids at a time when they need it most.|

Christmas in July is a month-long, community-wide fundraiser for St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. Every year, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital Foundation aids corporations, local businesses, civic organizations, and individuals in bringing some mid-year holiday cheer to the kids that need it most.
On Friday, July 26, from 7am-1pm, all of the community partners, sponsors, and donors will come together to celebrate their month-long fundraising efforts. Local media Magic 94.9 and Fox 13 broadcast live as local businesses and individuals share info the joy of giving, patients will have a special visit from Santa, and volunteers help collect toy and monetary donations from community members.
Health care settings are often stressful and frightening experiences for children and families. Providing recreation, developmental play, and play therapy gives kids strategies for coping and bring a momentary escape from their illness. It is through generous community support, and events like Christmas in July, that St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital is able to provide these services that dramatically alter a child’s hospital experience.
There are several options for involvement including getting a team together to participate in our Office Challenge, corporate sponsorship, hosting or attending donation and toy drives in the community, or making a donation directly to St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. Contact us for more details.
